How to Join

A man must voluntarily petition a Prince Hall Affiliated Masonic Lodge for degrees in Masonry to become a member of the fraternity of Free and Accepted Masons. According to our long-standing tradition, the petitioner must initiate the fraternity's membership; no mason ever invites someone to join.

You only need to be of good character and want to better yourself; you don't need to have a friend or relative who is a Mason. The general procedures that someone thinking about joining should adhere to are listed below. Hiram's Trowel Lodge appreciates your interest and is pleased to address whatever questions you may have.

Ask for Information
If you know a Mason, ask him about the fraternity. We enjoy conversing with everyone interested in Masonry, so don't be shy.

​​​Visit Lodges

The Houston area is home to several lodges, so picking the best one for you is crucial. Your home lodge for life will be the one you join first. To choose the lodge that best suits your needs, we advise you to visit as many as possible and get a sense of the other lodges in addition to ours.

Complete your Background Check

No matter which Prince Hall Affiliated Lodge you may choose, you will be first required to complete a background check.

Step 1: Before you proceed, be sure to contact the Lodge Secretary.

 

​Response Time Expectation

 

• Your Background Check will be reviewed by the Grand Lodge, as quickly as possible. 

• If the Grand Lodge approves the Background Check, you will receive a notification to contact our Lodge Secretary with your Background Check results.

• At that time, the Lodge Secretary will communicate any additional information and the next steps.

 

NOTE: A Joining Fee will be required when the Petition for Membership (Application) is submitted for review. (JOINING FEE is Not Required to Complete this Background Check)

Request a Petition
After you have obtained your Background Check results, you may request a Petition for Membership (Application) from the Lodge Secretary.

The Lodge Secretary will provide the necessary instructions to proceed.​
